EN 1090 explained simply
EN 1090-2 specifies the requirements for the execution and conformity assessment of steel structures. For us as a manufacturer, this means that every delivered structure must meet defined safety and functional parameters. In this article, we explain what the standard specifically addresses, how execution classes work, and why it is important for you as a client or designer to verify the manufacturer's qualification before signing the contract.
What standard EN 1090-2 covers
The standard does not replace design documentation but defines how structures must be manufactured to meet the designed parameters. The main objective is to ensure that steel components possess the required strength, stiffness and stability. The standard specifies requirements for materials, welding, assembly and final product inspection. The difference between a conventional steel workshop and a certified manufacturer lies in the fact that the certified manufacturer is obliged to comply with these processes under the supervision of an accredited person and to document them.
Execution classes EXC1 to EXC4
Execution Classes define the level of control and manufacturing quality. The higher the class, the stricter the requirements for documentation and testing.
- EXC1: Lowest requirements. Used for structures where the risk of failure is minimal and the impact on safety is negligible.
- EXC2: Standard class for most common buildings. Suitable for residential houses, office buildings, smaller industrial halls and standard structures. For these applications, EXC2 is in practice usually sufficient and the most frequently requested.
- EXC3: Higher quality requirements. Used for structures where the consequences of failure are more severe, such as bridges, crane runways or large halls with high operational loads.
- EXC4: The strictest requirements. Used for critical structures where failure could have fatal consequences for human life, such as very tall buildings, special bridges or nuclear installations.
CE marking and declaration of conformity
Every steel structure supplied to the market must bear CE marking. This confirms that the product meets the requirements of harmonised standards. Along with the structure, we will provide a Declaration of Performance (DoP). This document contains key information: product identification, execution classes used, manufacturer identification and certification details. Without this document, the structure cannot be legally incorporated into a building.
Link to ISO 3834
Welding quality is a key parameter of structural strength. Therefore, production is bound by ISO 3834, which defines welding quality requirements. As manufacturers, we work with certified welders and comply with the requirements of this standard, ensuring that welded joints meet the prescribed quality regardless of whether it is EXC2 or a higher class.
Risks of working with an uncertified manufacturer
If you order a structure from a manufacturer without a valid EN 1090 certificate, several problems may arise. The greatest risk is difficulty with the completion permit. The building authority may refuse to issue the completion decision if a valid declaration of performance is missing. On top of that, in the event of damage (e.g., property damage or personal injury), an insurance company may exercise its right of recourse or deny coverage if it is proven that the structure was not manufactured in accordance with applicable standards. For you, this means bearing the costs of repairing or replacing the structure and any potential legal disputes.
How to identify a valid certificate
When selecting a manufacturer, request a current certificate in accordance with EN 1090-2. Verify the following in the document:
- Execution class: Ensure that the manufacturer holds certification for the class you require (e.g., EXC2).
- Validity: Check the expiry date.
- Scope: The certificate must include the types of structures you are requesting.
As Ocel na míru, we hold a valid certificate for manufacturing in accordance with EN 1090-2 in class EXC2. All our structures are supplied with complete documentation, including CE marking and a declaration of performance.
